President's Welcome
Happy New Year Franklin County Chapter! Well, it may be the middle of 2011, but OSPE and the Franklin County Chapter rang in a new fiscal year on July 1st with a new team of board members and committee chairs. I would first like to express my gratitude for the hard work of last year’s team, particularly our outgoing Chapter President, Howard Jones, PE. I would also like to congratulate our Treasurer, Steve Day, who in May received the Meritorious Service Award from OSPE. This is a prestigious award, and I was very excited when I heard that Steve received it. Among other things, Steve has been our Chapter Treasurer several times over, and is responsible for establishing the accounting system our chapter uses to manage our budget. Thank you again, Steve, for your continued dedication to our Chapter and to the State Society.
Franklin County Chapter and OSPE had a great 2010-2011 year. Looking back it was full of work with our outreach programs, including awarding scholarships to talented high school seniors, visiting schools for the imagine engineering coloring contest, judging projects for special awards at the District Science Fairs, hosting students for Engineer For A Day, and coordinating the Regional MATHCOUNTS competition. We also had exciting luncheon programs, including a presentation about GridSMART business incentives, a seminar on improving presentation skills, a historical lesson about the Army Corps of Engineers during the Civil War, a presentation on ODOT’s Historical Bridge Program, and a video and discussion on Engineering Ethics, among others. Even with all of our work putting together the monthly Columbus Engineer, our ongoing membership campaign, supporting the State Society’s work, and balancing the books, we found time to have fun with our family bowling event (although I don’t think any of us should quit our day jobs).
This year promises to be even busier for our chapter, and we need the help of all of our members to make it as exciting and successful as last year. We still have openings for some of our luncheon presentations. If you gave a presentation recently on a topic the Chapter might be interested in, we would love to have you share it at one of our luncheons. Just contact me at

or 614-208-6986. The Franklin County Chapter is also the host chapter for OSPE’s Spring CPD Conference in 2012. We need volunteers to help solicit sponsorships, find exciting speakers for the conference, organize a tour, and plan activities for our auxiliary. As I look forward to the coming year I would encourage you to get involved in some of the many activities we have planned. Working with your fellow chapter members is a great way to network and have fun. Finally, as your Chapter Board we are here to serve our members and your input is vital to the success of our organization, so please contact me if you have any questions or suggestions for the Franklin County Chapter.
